THE BOUNDARY
393 x 281 cm, canvas, acrylic paint
Created in the house of Uncle Long, on 219 National Road, Jietou Town, Longshang Village, at the foot of Gaoligong Mountain.
Legend speaks:
In the vast, uncharted depths of space,
where the Realm of Desire, the Realm of Form,
and the Formless Realm converge—
there lies the soul’s battlefield,
the ladder to enlightenment.
Each step upon this path
is both a transcendence of self
and a passage closer to life’s ultimate truth.
A boundary divides me—
mind from soul, soul from body.
In the Realm of Desire, I writhe, I suffer,
drowning in wealth, power, flesh, indulgence.
In the Realm of Form, through its twenty-two celestial planes,
through the First, Second, and Third Meditations,
I touch fleeting light, taste tranquility,
sense joy, glimpse the edge of truth.
Then, I leap—
into the Realm of the Formless,
where silence reigns, where emptiness breathes,
where color and shape no longer bind me.
Here, there is nothing—
only pure awareness, spirit unshackled.
Beyond the Five Elements, beyond the cycles of existence,
my mind, untethered, stretches toward the infinite void.
I was lost in desire.
I was drunk on the illusions of the material world.
I awakened in the vastness of spirit.
Through the Nujiang Grand Canyon,
deep into the Himalayas, I walked.
I brushed past lamas, monks, Taoists, yogis,
each immersed in their own Samadhi.
And there, standing between shores—
between past and present, between all that was and all that will be—
I searched
But even at the edge of the Three Realms,
no answer was found…
